Abstract:
This data represents a predictive model of benthos (benthic invertebrate biomass in 5 categories) for the Bering Sea (based on a publication by Oppel and Huettmann 2010; last model revison done Dec 11th 2007). It is based on compiled and published benthos data from various sources (details and data providers provided in methods). It is mapped in ArcGIS and analysed with a machine learning algorithm (RandomForest in R), based on public environmental data sets. This model extends earlier work by Grebmeier (2006, Progress in Oceanography 71:331-361), and the data from our research was used in other, global studies, e.g. Wei et al. (2010). These data provide the first predictive large-scale benthic biomass model for the study area and will be suitable for future updates with new data, more quantitative analysis, and human impact and climate change modeling.
