Abstract:
During 10 days in spring 2010, twenty Black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus ITIS 554382 ) and boreal chickadee (Poecile hudsonicus ITIS 554386) observation points were surveyed along the UAF Trail System. The survey days were carried out in spring from April 13th til May 1st. by one observer and included edge and interior habitats for a test about habitat preferences. The two chickadee species sightings were pooled. These data come from an undergraduate student project in the Landscape Ecology BIO469 class, and collected some basic but suitable data for the abundance, distribution and habitat preference for chickadees of the Boreal Forest in the interior of Alaska. The data can be analysed with Distance Sampling methods, can be plotted with a basic Geographic Information System (GIS) and to obtain general estimates of detectability.
Purpose:
To observe and record Black-capped and Boreal Chickadees (Poecile atricapillus and Poecile hudsonicus) at 20 randomized geo-referenced locations along the UAF Trails System and to investigate whether edge or interior habitat was preferred.

Methodology_Description:
Twenty point locations were selected on the trail and off the trail for habitat interior and edge. The visual detections were collected with radial distances. The oral detections were classified as near and far detections. This approach can allow to use Distance Sampling methods and for correcting for detecatbility.

The locations were taken from Google Earth and re-assigned with coordinates. It results in +- 100m accuracy.
