Description:
Abstract:
This data set contains non-invasive Rapid Biodiversity Sampling data from a GRID in the Akan region, Hokkaido, Japan (app. + 43.34227 decimal latitude and + 144.12959 decimal longitude, geographic datum WGS 84; altitude of c. 100 to 450 meters above sea level) . It covers 25 geo-referenced GPS grid plots spaced 100m apart , all of which got surveyed 3 times during June 11th-15th 2010 by the author. In addition, 5 random points got also partly surveyed within the GRID. The habitat covers a forest landscape located near a road and a river. The raw data carry a coarse taxonomic (to be evaluated carefully) and functional identification for birds, insects, trees and plants, focussing on structural habitat elements. It includes raw count data for 351 bird observations using point transects, and 348 insect observations using 4 trapping webs (3 repeats each). At each plot, the 3m radius vegetation got described qualitatively, and the center tree and 4 nearest neighbours (5 trees) were measured for species (coarse taxonomy), tree height and DBH (Diameter Breast Height). All bird observations carry a radial distance from observer and were collected according to DISTANCE Sampling. Respectively, a DISTANCE trapping web protocol, also allowing for detectability correction in abundance estimates, was applied for ground-living insects. Each plot was visited three times according to the PRESENCE software for being able to obtain occupancy. It was tried to verify all species names to the current ITIS taxonomy. Two digital plot photos (sky, habitat) exist for each of the 30 sampling locations. All species identifications in this data set should be considered carefully and since not done by a locla expert. A more detailed biological analysis is coming forward, and will be published elsewhere. Comparable Biodiversity GRID data so far is available for several other regions (Nicaragua, North and Central Alaska, Russian Far East, Papua New-Guinea, Costa Rica, Northern China, Russian Far East). Data from the other study sites are also available online. For details please contact author.
Purpose:
These GRID data were collected in order to obtain global low cost rapid biodiversity assessment data corrected for detectability. The taxonomic detail is not high and needs evaluation, but allows to capture functional and landscape detail well. Data from this site are compatible with other locations using GRID sampling, and where the same data were collected following an identical protocol. Findings from this study allow to learn more about the general state of biodiversity and multiple-species monitoring, and the data support Geographic Information Systems (GIS) modeling, ground-truthing of remote sensing images and doing change detection research.
Supplemental_Information:
A M.Sc. thesis that has used and explained such data for several GRIDs and statistical analysis was completed by Nemitz (2008; available from the author online as PDF). Nemitz D. (2008). AN ASSESSMENT OF SAMPLING DETECTABILITY FOR GLOBAL BIODIVERSITY MONITORING: RESULTS FROM SAMPLING GRIDS IN DIFFERENT CLIMATIC REGIONS. Masters in International Conservation, Georg August University and MINC program, Lincoln New Zealand and Goettingen, Germany. Taxonomic_Procedures:
The species were identified by Falk Huettmann. The taxonomic and structural detail is coarse; the species ID needs a local expert check and evaluation. The purpose of this dataset is mostly on the structural landscape use, and for a rapid assessment.
Taxonomic_Completeness:
This data set is not very accurate on the taxonomic detail and needs a review and control.

This is a Rapid Assessment of complex biodiversity and done by a surveyor not familiar with local details and species. Consequently, these data are not high quality re. species taxonomy, but good quality for spatial and structural landscape ecology research, and the value of this data is in the geo-referenced data. Species identifications are not done by a local expert.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The data are collected consistently and by one author. Very few plots could not be visited due to rain and logistical reasons.
