Abstract:
This dataset of 108 opportunistic habitat plots provides information on moss thickness and related metrics (shoot length, moss coverage of trees and in the plot) from Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands), British Columbia, Canada. These data were collected in September and October 2010 in order to get an overview about the moss layers on Haida Gwaii and to use moss thickness as a habitat measure for Marbeled Murrelets (Brachyramphus marmoratus) and to address potential climate change questions. Therefore, the detected potential nest branches for Marbled Murrelets were reported along a line transect of 15m. Moss layer thickness on the ground was measured by choosing patches within the 15m radius plot that represented minimum, medium and maximum layer thickness. The moss coverage of trees was measured by using a four nearest neighborhood approach, focused on Diameter Breast Height (DBH), moss layer thickness, shoot length of the moss and the moss coverage of the trees. In addition, 320 photographs of the canopy, the vegetation and the ground were taken for each plot. These data can be used for the remote sensing analysis. The data consists of four spreadsheets and the photos. The first sheet is named: Branches with moss and consists of 10 columns by 147 rows. The second sheet is named: Moss on ground and consists of 22 columns by 110 rows. The third sheet is named: Four nearest neighbors and consists of 54 columns by 111 rows. The fourth sheet consists of 26 columns by 110 rows. This dataset is currently worked up for a report, and available upon request from the authors.
Purpose:
To answer model prediction questions in the Pacific Rim, concerning moss distribution, habitat suitability for Marbeled Murrelets, the relevance of mosses for the carbon cycle and climate change issues.

Methodology_Description:
The plots were oportunistically located throughout the Island of Haida Gwaii, Canada. At each site a line transect of 15m was carried out in a random direction to identify potential nesting branches of Marbled Murrelets. Potential nesting branches were defined as branches >15 cm in diameter, with moss mats and at a hight of >10 m above ground (Burger et al. 2010). Minimum, medium and maximum moss layers within the plot were identified and the depth of the layer was measured, as well as the shoot length of the moss. This was done by using a plastic ruler. The number of different moss species and the number of arthropodes at this locations were counted. Moss coverage of the whole plot in percent was determined. The four nearest neighbor measurement (center tree plus four neighbours) was carried out in each plot, determining the tree species, measuring the tree height, the tree circumference in breast height, the moss thickness on the stem of each tree, the shoot length of the moss on the stem of ech tree and counting the number of different moss species where the thickness already had been measured. The moss coverage of each tree was approximated and classified into percent. Afterwards the average moss coverage of trees per plot was calculated and a most frequent coverage class apllied. In addition, the slope of the plot and the direction of the slope in degree were measured using a compass. 320 Photos (four per plot) of the canopy, the vegetation and the ground that were taken are available upon request from the UAF servers. They are named: P(for plot)x(number of plot) canopy/vegetation/ground.jpg. An Example would be P1 canopy.jpg. The canopy cover, as well as the shrub cover were approximated. Information about wildlife observations, disturbances, site description, edge distance, proximity to a river, coast or lake, wetness index between zero and ten, temperature in degrees celsius and whether the plot is in a valley location or not, was added. The GPS coordinats of every plot were saved in a portable GPS device (Garmin Venture HC) using the geographic coordinate system: WGS_1984. GPS coordinates were reported with 5 decimals and the GPS accuracy as well as the altitude were noted down.
