Nocturnal temperature measurements (with iButtons) and insect trapping (pitfall trap) was done for the 20 winter plots (as part of the climate change class). The 40 plots were done in 4 forest strata (wetland, riparian forest, mature forest and meadows) of the Maderas Rainforest Conservancy Ometepe Estate in Nicaragua, Central America (latitude of c. 11.41619 North, longitude of c. 85.54106 West; georeferencing used WGS84). Each strata was sampled with representative plots, determined opportunistically and for representative sampling, and in order to obtain confidence intervals of the carbon stock estimate. Measurements include for instance diameter breast height (DBH), tree height estimations, root-shoot estimates, soil measures, leaf-litter, and sometimes a coarse species identification. Each plot was photographed (canopy, habitat and floor). Such data can be used for carbon sequestration and trading for instance. There are five levels of carbon stock assessments to obtain the total carbon stock density: land-use category, above-ground tree biomass, above-ground sapling biomass, below-ground biomass, carbon in litter, herb & grass, and soil organic carbon. The total carbon stock is then converted to tons of CO2 equivalent by multiplying with a correction factor. The raw data do not include these computations but are the basis to provide these computed estimates. The raw data set is a simple flat hierarchically nested matrix table in MS Excel (PCIBM compatible) consisting of 1521 rows and 113 columns and is 767 KB in size. It can also be used for a general forest and habitat inventory for the estate. Field data collection was done by Moritz Schmid, Ben Carlson, Hazel Berrios, and Falk Huettmann,
(earlier work in Costa Rica data was done by Grant Humphries and Mark Spangler).
20 plots were measured in summer 2011 (collected by Hazel Berrios) and the remaining 20 plots in January 2012 (Moritz Schmid, Ben Carlson and Falk Huettmann; as part of the climate change class at Ometepe Biological Station). Nocturnal temperature measurements (with iButtons) and insect trapping (pitfall trap) were done for the 20 winter plots; part of a student project.
