Abstract:
This data set contains the morphometric information for birds caught with mistnets and with other means for sampling Avian Influenza (AI) at two sites. In southeastern Kamchatka 145 birds were caught and 225 samples were collected. In southern Sakhalin, 83 birds were caught and 90 samples collected. These data were collected during spring and fall migration in collaboration with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, USA. It was assumed that some birds in that region link with Alaska. This dataset focuses mainly on seabirds, some passerines and shorebirds using three band sizes. Measurements from 41 species are reported in the dataset. Avian Influenza analysis of samples is coming forward, and will be published elsewhere. Here we present on traditional bird banding and opportunistic measurements of birds caught in the framework of the Russian Far East AI sampling campaign 2007. This dataset links with 6 other sites in the Russian Far East and Hokkaido, and is compatible to other bird banding studies along the flyway. It represents a coordinated study done during fall migration and with identical methods at the other 6 sites within the wider Sea of Okhotsk region, Russian Far East in 2006 and 2007. Data from the other study sites are also available online. An analsis of these data is coming forward; for details please contact authors and project collaborators.
Purpose:
These data were collected in order to link the potential occurrence of Avian Influenza in the Russian Far East and Hokkaido/Japan with morphometric measures for the same individuals. Data from this site are compatible with 6 other locations at 2006 and 2007 where the same data where collected following an identical protocol. Findings from this study would allow to learn more about state of the birds, subspecies, migration tactics, flyways and Avian Influenza.
Supplemental_Information:
The sampling and banding sites are geo-referenced. The Avian Influenza component of this study is currently in progress and will be reported elsewhere. For details, please contact authors. The Banding Protocol followed the 'revised European African Songbird Migration Network' standards (Bairlein et al. 1995; available online) and used the Kaiser fat score. The suggested field protocol is included in the methods section for transparency. The AI data are coming forward, they can be linked with this data set by the banding and individual id number. The AI data have a database of their own. Fully explained in Methodology; see protocol. The banding data are submitted to the Russian Ringing Center in Moscow. Field: Southeastern Kamchatka and southern Sakhalina sites were sampled. For locations and location codes see: Kamchatka 1) Avacha vally, near Elizovo 2) Starichkov Island, Pasific Ocean 3) Khlamovitskoe Boloto (Bog) Sakhalin 1) East cost of Aniva Bay, 5 km to south from Korsakov, SI 2) Cottages (Dachi), Dal'nee, Yu.Sakhalinsk, SI We used a protocol that is viryually identical with the 'revised African-European Songbird Migration Network' banding scheme. Lab: Data were cleaned and worked up in EXCEL. The detailed protocol is the following: Bird Banding Protocol, Summer/Fall Season 2006 (version 2: Fairbanks 10th July 2006) Bird Bands are provided by the local contractors for each of the birds caught and swaped for this project (>1500; this includes passerines, shorebirds, gulls and waterfowl). Bird Band Numbers are used as a reference for linking AI swap samples stored in tubes. If bird is not banded, use a unique and well documented code for birds, e.g. date+species+number. Bird Data to be collected: Full Name of Collector (full name, no abbreviations) Location of Sample Collection (local name, English and Russian) Coordinates of Sample (latitude and longitude; use GPS if possible) Net Number where sample was caught/collected (if possible, provide map/sketch of net setup) Date of Sample Collection (day day, month month, year year year year) Time of Sample Collection (local time 00.00 - 24.00h) Species Name 1 (English name; subspecies if possible) Species Name 2 (Scientific name only if appropriate) Bird Band Number (if collected; assumes Russian banding scheme. Mark if from dropping or dead bird) Wing length (in millimeters, flattened and unflattened for international compatibility and science reasons) Head to Beak (maximum in millimeters; not used for passerines) (Tarsus and Beak Length is not measured; can be done voluntarily by the bander. Document method used) Age (follow EURING standards; see Manual enclosed) Sex (where possible; document method used to determine) Primaries (BTO Moult Score Card; see Manual enclosed) Body Moult (Beginning, Middle, End judged by expert knowledge =majority of feathers) Body Fat (Kaiser Scale; see reference enclosed) Weight (in grams; to the nearest 0.1 g for birds weighing <200 g) Feather Samples (5 each: Growing Feathers, Body, Secondary, Tail Central: plug not cut. For Primaries, please use one from outer 10th) Blood samples (usually not taken, unless for specific species and numbers and when Falk Huettmann is around; consult with Falk Huettmann for details) Photo taken ?
