1Huettmann, F. and P. Yen, Centre for Wildlife Ecology, Simon Fraser University2002UAF - Marbled Murrelet Sightings on Lakes in British Columbia, Canada: Digital Dataset.digital datasetBurnaby, British ColumbiaCentre for Wildlife Ecology, Simon Fraser UniversityfalseThis data set contains the most complete known Marbled Murrelet sightings on lakes in British Columbia, Canada. Stable isotope analysis of Marbled Murrelets suggest that these birds feed on freshwater prey, but lakes were never really surveyed for Marbled Murrelets in British Columbia. All known sightings across years and seasons were compiled from the scientific and grey literature, and written into a database. Information on survey effort is not available, e.g. party size and survey hours, nor on detection distance. Thus, these data need to be interpreted as an index and opportunistic sightings. Fifty-five sightings were made for Marbled Murrelets on 24 lakes over a period of 1927-1986. These data were used to derive a first lake model of Marbled Murrelets. To create a centralized inventory of Marbled Murrelet sightings on lakes within British Columbia. This dataset is further used to build a predictive large-scaled GIS Marbled Murrelet distribution model for the lakes of coastal British Columbia, and other applications. This digital dataset is created or extracted from published sources, technical reports, and includes some unpublished raw data. Falk Huettmann and Peggy Yen are the scientific administrators of this digital dataset, which was processed and compiled from the literature by BCIT students (2000/1:Louis Chora, Heather Newson, Leah Saunders; 2001/2: Nevis Antoniazzi, Marylee Pregitzer and Greg Burroughs) in the framework of their research projects. This dataset is subject to future updates.Falk Huettmann and Peggy Yen, Centre for Wildlife Ecology, Simon Fraser University, are the administrators of the compiled and digitized dataset. This dataset has been developed for internal research and publication purposes for BCIT student research projects (2000/1:Louis Chora, Heather Newson, Leah Saunders; 2001/2: Nevis Antoniazzi, Marylee Pregitzer and Greg Burroughs). Consultation from the Centre for Wildlife Ecology, is recommended prior to use, analysis and interpretation of this dataset.
This dataset represents only an index of relative abundance for lake sightings of Marbled Murrelets in BC, 1924-1986 for specific lakes. Sightings are opportunistic and probably biased by human access to lakes. Due to lack of consistent surveys, awareness and reporting, many more locations might exist where Marbled Murrelets could be found on lakes.

There are differences in the length of time and number of surveys per lake depending on the study. In some cases, the average detection is reported and does not include the variance around that measure. For some lake surveys conducted in Queen Charlotte Island, surveys might stem from occupied detection surveys.not applicableNANAFieldFor the full methodology, please refer to the original document and publications.R.W.
