UAF - Winter distribution of the razorbill, Alca torda, in the lower Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick - Progress Report of a Pilot Project for Regular Winter surveys in 1997-1998
false
This data set contains monthly survey data from the Blacks Harbour – North Head , Grand Manan Island and The Wolves, ferry, lower Bay of Fundy, Canada. It covers waterbird, seabird and some sea mammal data, collected with unlimited width surveys (relative abundance) from one side of the ferry (PIROP protocol) throughout the years 1999-2000.
Provide general abundance information on seabirds and sea mammals for the south-western Grand Manan Island region.

Sightings are referenced to the observer, the specific cruise and ship name, ship speed, time and date. Accuracy of bird ID and bird numbers are discussed elsewhere (see references above). GPS instrumentation was not available to the observers but is available from the ferry.
Methodology is consistent throughout. At least one principle observer (FH, KM) was present on all cruises. Cruise start and end locations are fixed; minor variations in the path between start and end points are related to tide, weather and traffic conditions.
Transects with confirmed absence are reported; however, absence need to be queried for 10minute transects where a specific species occurs but not another one (see Huettmann and Diamond 2001).
As noted above, cruise start and end points are fixed in space. Ten minute transect positions are infered from start and end point data. Specific geo-referenced data may be available from ships logs or can be extrapolated by time.
Ship cruise on water. Altitudinal variations are caused by tidal changes, waves or ship height are all irrelevant under conditions encountered in this study.
Field
Observers followed the PIROP method, described by Brown (1971) and Brown et al. (1975), with modifications imposed by access limitations aboard commercial ferry. Specificaly, seabirds are surveyed from a moving ship, facing 180 degrees to port or to starboard, as recorded with cruise data. Sightings are ship-referenced (specific characteristics of the survey vessel) and grouped within time-referenced 10 minute transects. Biasing factors during the survey are recorded (e.g. weather and water conditions; circling birds, fishing vessel activities). Cruise dates, times, observers as follows:
