Abstract:
This project was initiated by Jason Bried (The Nature Conservancy) in 2007 on a North American wide scale. The Fairbanks dataset represents one of many sampling stations across the continent where dragonflies were sampled according to a specific protocol. In this survey we recorded all adult dragonflies at a wetland (Sheep Creek and Smith Lake) in the Fairbanks vicinity from May through September. Data are geo-referenced and follow designed transects, according to the TNC specifications. The following species were observed (following ITIS taxonomy): Sympetrum internum (Cherry-faced Meadowhawk), Sympetrum danae (Black Meadowhawk), Cordulia shurtleffii (American Emerald), Libellula quadrimaculata (Four-spotted Skimmer), Leucorrhinia hudsonica (Hudsonian Whiteface), Leucorrhinia borealis (Boreal Whiteface), Leucorrhinia proxima (Belted Whiteface), Aeshna palmata (Paddle-tailed Darner), Aeshna interrupta (Variable Darner) and Aeshna eremita (Lake Darner)

Approximately bi-weekly surveys were carried out. Key Qualifications of the Observer: (1) accurate species identifications during every survey (2) committed to bi-weekly surveys lasting one hour each

Sampled on similar weather days across the study period restricted to local flight season (May-September). Surveys ended when snow covered the ground. Each survey lasted one hour with duration and starting time fairly consistent (but adjusted for local conditions). Sampled during peak flight activity (in general between 10:00AM and 5:00PM). Carefully recorded species sightings in 10 minute increments (0-10, 10-20, 20-30, 30-40, 40-50, 50-60) during every survey. We made observations in a consistent manner during surveys and throughout the study period (walked the same route during each survey).
