Description:
Abstract:
This data set describes distriution data of 40 tree species (Forest Inventory) for Switzerland and it was used for the NCEAS working group, for instance in the model publication Elith et al. (2006). This project was based on 6 international data sets which are described elsewhere. Here the data are described in generic terms so that transparent and repeatable research can be carried out and for benchmark assessments of model applications and creative use of data for conservation purposes.
For modeling purposes, this bird data set was extended with 13 predictors and it carries a cell size of 100m. The mean number of records per species is 1,170 for presence absence it is 810. Overall, the dataset consists of 10,013 sites.
Purpose:
This dataset about trees of Switzerland is provided as a proper description of ISO-compliant FGDC open access data for research purposes. This metadata set complements several research publications in the NCEAS working group, namly Elith et al. (2006).

Methodology_Description:
Data were received from data holder and then used in a GIS for model work. Later, predictors were added, as stated in Elith et al. 2006 and forthcoming,
Initial data methods: From a forest vegetation data base containing irregularly and non-systematically sampled forest vegetation relevees throughout Switzerland. Records start in 1913. Most plots were collected after 1920, and ~75% of the data were sampled after 1940. The database ends in 1998, but most records are from 1994 and earlier. The individual authors had their own local sampling design or used preferential sampling techniques (details in Wohlgemuth32). Around 14 100 relevees were selected from the original data base, targetting minimal data standards such as coordinates, and species extracted from these.
