Appalachian Trail mega-transect HOBO climate and Spot location data May-November 2019
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: tabular digital data
This dataset is based on a hike by co-author MS of 2,193 miles along the Appalachian Trail in the eastern United States in the summer and fall months of 2019. The trail represents a “mega-transect” along which spatially-referenced climate data was passively collected. MS carried a HOBO U23 Pro-V2 data logger at all times in an external backpack pocket. This data logger was programmed to record temperature (degrees Celsius) and relative humidity (%) at 15-minute intervals throughout the duration of the trip. Also a SPOT GEN3 satellite GPS messenger was carried which was used to record GPS coordinates (decimal latitude and longitude) approximately once per day. MS started hiking northbound from Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia on 31 May, 2019. Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park, Maine was summitted on 24 August, 2019, a sub total of 1,168 miles over 84 days. MS resumed hiking south from Harper’s Ferry on 4 September, 2019 and reached Springer Mountain, Georgia on 7 November, 2019. On the southbound portion of the trip MS covered a subtotal of 1,025 miles in 60 days. Over the entire length of the trail approximately 15 miles walked per day was averaged. The data logger consists of two sets.Climate data was recorded at all times, including when the pack was stored indoors during rest days and occasional overnight indoor lodging. This accounts for outliers in the dataset. Overall, the dataset has 131 locations for the Appalachian Trail..
