AbstractMany organizations conducting business in Alaska realize the necessity for robust cultural awareness training methods, tools and resources as means to managing risks and building positive relationships with stakeholders. This paper investigates the concept of cultural intelligence and its role in improving organizational performance and mitigating risks. Data collected through surveys and interviews showed that cultural awareness training focused on Alaska Native cultures was conducted by a significant number of Alaska organizations. The training is used as a risk mitigation and stakeholder management tool. Data analysis includes a description of the most common methods used to deliver cultural awareness training. The paper lists recommendations for stakeholder identification and engagement, offers considerations for choosing an appropriate cultural awareness training method and developing a training evaluation process. The Alaska Cultural Awareness Guide (see Appendix D) was developed to serve as a training aid and a single source of reference about Alaska and Alaska Native cultures for the project sponsor’s organization. Police culture: does culture prevent proper policing?McGuffin, Michael; Duke, J. Robert; May, Jeff; Boldt, Frank (2018)This project is about identifying the key issues that police officers face in today's society. There is an emphasis on community policing and to adjust police training to account for the strong pull of the police subculture. The main purpose of this project is to strengthen the bonds between the police and the community and changing how officers approach their interactions within the community. The end goal is to alleviate community concerns that police officers are out to get them while also alleviating the concerns officers have that the community hates them. This project will attempt to quell those concerns while proposing a solution that benefits both officers, the police department, and the community.
Teacher-led professional development in arts and culture: promoting teacher ability to engage students using their placeKing, Sandra J. (2017)This project is a piece of the SILKAT (Sustaining Indigenous and Local Knowledge, Arts, and Teaching) Grant that is funded by Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies. It describes the development of one of the professional developments modules as well as two of the cultural art units that make up the Professional Development Course and Cultural K-12 Art Curriculum that are being created for the Bering Strait School District as (BSSD) a part of this grant. The professional development module described leads teachers through learning the core practice of "engaging students with their place." This is extremely valuable in all areas, but especially the BSSD, as the schools are very remote, located in Alaska Native villages off of the road system. The art units will address the cultural values of "understanding others" and "hard-work/self-sufficiency." These values will be reinforced using appropriate studio habits of mind that are transferable skills to any content or situation.
An indigenous teacher preparation frameworkTom, Lexie J.; John, Theresa; Barnhardt, Ray; Amarok, Barbara; Marker, Michael (2018-05)The result of this research is a framework to support Indigenous Teacher Preparation within the Native Studies department at Northwest Indian College (NWIC). I attempted to answer three main questions in the duration of this dissertation research. The first question is, how do we recreate an Indigenous method for teaching and learning in a modern educational institution? The second question is, what does a Native Studies faculty member need to be prepared to teach classes? The third question is, how do we measure learning? Participants for this research included elders from the Lummi community, Native Studies faculty members at NWIC, and administrators. As an Indigenous researcher, I have defined my own Indigenous epistemology and this guided my research. I have chosen a qualitative research design to assist me in answering these research questions. The data were analyzed and coded into main themes. This analysis produced teacher competencies and methods of measurement that will be used within the Indigenous teacher preparation framework. This framework is important to the future of the Native Studies Leadership program and NWIC.
