    • The Strength of Association: Housing Density and Delinquency

Justice Center, University of Alaska Anchorage (Justice Center, University of Alaska Anchorage, 2004)
This issue of Anchorage Community Indicators provides a brief examination of the relationship between housing density and delinquency in the Municipality of Anchorage. A commonly held belief is that crime rates rise as housing density increases, despite only sparse scientific evidence in support of this theory. These data show no relationship between housing density and delinquency at the block group level within the Municipality of Anchorage.
    • The Strength of Association: Neighborhood Poverty and Social Deviance

Justice Center, University of Alaska Anchorage (Justice Center, University of Alaska Anchorage, 2005-02)
This issue of Anchorage Community Indicators examines the strength of association between neighborhood-level poverty in Anchorage neighborhoods— measured as the percentage of households falling below the federally designated threshold of poverty — and social deviance — measured as the annual rate of police calls-for-service for various offenses. These data show poverty to be significantly related to a number of police calls-for-service indicators. These simple measures of association (not causation) align with studies in other contexts which have found that communities experiencing economic hardship bear a double burden in that they also suffer a disproportionate amount of social problems.
    • The Strength of Association: Population Density and Social Deviance

Justice Center, University of Alaska Anchorage (Justice Center, University of Alaska Anchorage, 2005-02)
This issue of Anchorage Community Indicators provides a brief examination of the relationship between population density and social deviance in the Municipality of Anchorage. A commonly held belief is that social density is positively correlated with social deviance, despite only sparse scientific evidence in support of this theory. A previous issue of Anchorage Community Indicators ("The Strength of Association: Housing Density and Delinquency," ACI 3a(1) (Jul 2004)) found no evidence of a relationship between housing density and deviance. The current issue builds on these previously reported findings by introducing a second measure of social density: population density, once again finding no evidence that social density of Anchorage neighborhoods is associated with community-level rates of social deviance.
