Abstract

In a call for the formation of the Irish Republic and independence from the United Kingdom, almost 500 people were killed in the Easter Rising of 1916. At this event, historian Dierdre Bryan discusses the importance of the 1916 Easter Uprising and its significance today. Dierdre Bryan has lived in Ireland, England, and the US. She received her PhD in Irish History from Boston College and currently teaches in the History Department at UAA. As a historical researcher in Ireland, Deirdre Bryan has contributed more than 70 articles to the Dictionary of Irish Biography (2009, Cambridge University Press) and conducted historical research on behalf of the Irish government, public and private organizations, and individuals.
