Abstract
Set in the United States and Europe between the 1890s and 2010s, Apples and Honey is a dark absurdist comedy drama feature film which traverses time and explores themes of friendship, belonging, and dating under late-stage capitalism. Despite nothing ever working out, the protagonists of Apples and Honey continually search for purpose and a reason to keep going. Apples and Honey is the story of two best friends, Samantha and Georgia, who navigate belonging and morality through a timetraveling journey for survival. Tired of prosecution and hoping to try out a different life, 10-year-old Georgia accidentally foresees the violent death of her family and village. To escape certain death, Georgia takes her best friend with her from 1888 to 1949 where they end up in Georgia Tann's hands, another helpless moment for the girls where they endure legal torture. At a particularly fitful moment, Georgia's anger boils over and she accesses more of her powers. She fast forwards time for herself and Samantha until the orphanage is shut down. The two best friends' time-skipping through the late 1900s ensues as they continually search for better times but are unable to find any. While trying to deal with the consequences of Georgia's power, Georgia and Samantha also navigate early adulthood, morality, dating, purpose, and belonging. And to make things even more complicated, something otherworldly is hunting them down. Apples and Honey is written with the intent to get audiences to question their biases, especially ones in which they see themselves as the good guy and others as the bad guy. Audiences will laugh while feeling the unease of uncomfortable truths about the world we live in. In Apples and Honey, just as in real life, we learn to make peace with the unacceptable.
