Abstract

Lost and Found Futures is a hybrid collection which, early on, poses the questions, "If the world is ending, what do I want to do about it?" and "What is worth saving?" Every piece in the collection is an attempt at an unearthing an answer. One such answer builds throughout the collection--the transformative power of music and the community it fosters. This collection weaves together essays that experiment with form, samples from an apocalyptic novel-in-progress, and erasure poems. By placing multiple genres in harmony with one another, Lost and Found Futures mimics the complexity of the lived experience of a millennial, neurodivergent writer with invisible illnesses. Apocalypse as a theme is engaged with not just on the literal but the metaphoric level in Lost and Found Futures through essays which interrogate chronic illness and the impact of climate change on the body. Although it does not shy away from difficult topics, hope, humor, and joy still emerge in this collection--a reminder that every ending is the beginning of something new.
